The refurbishment and extension of a domestic property

Architects: Nye Saunders

Engineers: Perega

Contractor: P J Whitmarsh Ltd

The project at this property in Guildford was to upgrade and modernise an existing mid-twentieth century house into a contemporary dwelling. We retained the form of the building but extended and opened up the rear elevation with glass to make the most of the far-reaching views. The aesthetic of the building was improved by re-organising the fenestration and creating large openings at the rear. The building was also covered in either render or timber cladding which had been specially treated to accelerate ageing so that within 6 months of the timber being fitted, the cladding has turned a consistent grey colour which matches in with the white and dark grey render sections.

The insulation and heating systems throughout the house were upgraded and the building’s carbon footprint reduced. The project has allowed the clients to enjoy the feel of a new house without the additional cost and effects on the environment that a new build creates.
