STAIRCASE

Unsted Park School, Godalming

Unsted Park School is a grade 2 listed former manor house now used as a special needs school forming part of the Priory Group.  As part of internal re-planning and decorating work, it was necessary for the students to have access to the previously staff-only existing staircase.  Options for alterations to the staircase were restricted due to its age and listed rating.  This, combined with the complex needs of the children especially in regard to their safety, called for some imaginative designing which resulted in this beautifully decorative and complex glass structure.  The structure is self-supporting and enables the existing balustrade to be visible from the centre of the light well.  The glass infill panels ensure the safety of the children and staff whilst the new balustrades have improved accessibility for all.  The project was completed by Deeks and Steere with the structural design by Thomasons and their Clear Structures Department.
