Nye Saunders designed the extensions and alterations to this unique 19th Century courtyard house.  Situated high up in the Surrey Hills, the house once served as the kitchen and service wing to one of the area’s most notable Grade 2* listed country houses before being converted in the 1950’s.

 

The brief was to provide a large kitchen / diner, utility space, boot room, a double garage and an enlarged first floor bedroom with en-suite bathroom.  Furthermore, the scheme was designed to generally improve the interconnection between rooms and make the principal entrance more prominent.

 

Although the house is not listed in its own right, due to its historic links with the adjacent house it was necessary to work with the local authority's conservation officer and to make a formal listed building application for the works.  The works have been phased, but to date the kitchen / diner extension, utility space and boot room utility extension / alterations have been completed.  In addition, the with insertion of a new solid Oak front door and the infilling of the original loggia framework with glazing to form an internal passageway has dramatically improved the flow of the house.  It is hoped works to construct the garage, first floor bedroom and gallery walkway over the dining room will happen in the coming years.
