NEW DWELLING
Godalming, Surrey
This project is situated in a prominent location in Godalming on the side of a steeply sloping bank. We obtained planning permission for our contemporary design for a new 300m2 dwelling which steps and falls up the contours of the site. The design had to be carefully developed to ensure that the new building neither detracted from the setting of the existing listed building at the front of the site nor harmed the protected trees which surround the development.
Due to the sloping character of the site, the proposed new house needed to be cut into the bank. This, together with the surrounding tall trees, meant that maximising natural light was a main driver of the final design. Skylights, light wells and large sections of glass were utilised to achieve this aim, the glass also emphasising the far reaching stunning views over Godalming. The glass was contrasted with natural materials such as timber and stone to provide texture and reflect the surrounding area.
